Announcing 2027 In-Person Summer Institutes for Reading and Writing Apprenticeship

Strengthening Reading and Writing Across the Disciplines

Reading and writing look different in every discipline: the way a historian reads a primary source isn’t how a scientist reads data, and neither is how a mathematician reads a proof. Most professional learning doesn’t account for that difference, which is why literacy gains in one subject so often don’t carry over to the next.

Reading Apprenticeship® is backed by independent research — five studies meeting rigorous evidence standards, a bar few programs in this field meet. Writing Apprenticeship™ builds on that same research-based framework, adapting proven Reading Apprenticeship routines to make writing visible, purposeful, and discipline-specific.

Built to work with the curriculum your teachers already use, Reading Apprenticeship and Writing Apprenticeship equip educators across every subject to make disciplinary thinking visible, so students learn to read, write, and reason like historians, scientists, mathematicians, and literary critics.
