Our Approach

Professional learning and coaching that works across the disciplines

The Apprenticeship approach is based on four interacting dimensions of learning that support academic growth and engage students by:

  • creating a collaborative environment
  • building on their prior knowledge
  • making thinking visible during reading and writing
  • developing reading and writing skills in the context of disciplinary practices

Teachers learn to implement evidence-based classroom routines that center disciplinary text reading, foster collaborative meaning-making, and use discipline-specific exemplars to support student writing.

These routines are woven into everyday subject-area teaching through metacognitive conversations—self-reflective discussions that help students learn to read, evaluate, and critique complex texts. Students don’t just learn content; they also talk about how they learn and what they are learning—just as a disciplinary expert would.

The approach emphasizes reading and writing processes, disciplinary practices, and students’ own interests and experiences—helping them become more skilled over time and preparing them to further participate in the content area.
