Our Evidence Base

Reading Apprenticeship® changes how teachers teach and students learn. Independent studies show that when educators take part in Reading Apprenticeship professional learning, they improve teaching reading in their subject area. This leads to real improvements in how students engage with texts and how much they read. This evidence-based approach has remained effective for over 30 years, with ongoing research and development in many different types of schools and subject areas.

Improved Student Outcomes: Results You Can See

Students of educators using our approach consistently outperform their peers on both literacy and subject-area assessments. The proof? Five federally funded studies confirm major improvements in student engagement, literacy skills, and academic performance.

Reading Apprenticeship students earn higher GPAs and show stronger reading comprehension.

And here’s what matters most: students report feeling more confident in their abilities and more independent as learners—skills that last a lifetime.

We Never Stop Improving for You and for Students

We keep up with the current research and study what works to continually tailor Reading Apprenticeship to support literacy achievement for students. This ongoing research keeps our professional learning current, evidence-based, and helpful for educators looking to make a difference in their classrooms.

Writing Apprenticeship®

Teachers who participate in Writing Apprenticeship professional learning demonstrate improvements in their knowledge and confidence when teaching writing.

WestEd researchers comparing teachers before and after the program found growth across all five areas of the Writing Apprenticeship framework. Here’s what improved:

  • strengthening pedagogical skills across key instructional practices
  • increasing understanding of the value of effective writing instruction methods
  • building confidence in using advanced writing strategies in the classroom
  • reframing teachers’ role as guides helping students develop writing knowledge and skills
  • deepening understanding of how writing skills develop

These early findings show that Writing Apprenticeship is an effective professional learning program that delivers results, transforming how teachers teach writing, build their capacity, and improve student writing and academic success. Research on the impacts of Writing Apprenticeship is currently underway and is forthcoming.

I can tell I improved as a reader because I know when I need to reread or slow down and think about what I read. I read to understand not just to get done because it saves time when you don’t [have to] go back.
